QUESTION FOR A FRIEND

My friend (Running Ugly) is getting a bike of her choice for her birthday. She has run several marathons and halves. She is now interested in biking and doing a triathlon next year. This was her question to me (and now to you) :
Should I get a road bike or a hybrid?

She is intimadated by the road bike somewhat because my first year on my road bike I wrecked on 50% of my rides. I was slow to get the hang of clipping in. I know what my advice was but what do you think?

Waddling while waiting for advice..............

Above all, she needs to get something that fits her and that she's comfortable riding. That's most important.

Having said that, since she wants to do triathlons next year, i'd highly recommend a road bike.

I was intimidated at first going from a road bike from a mountain bike, but it wasn't bad once I got used to it.

Ditto. If she is serious about doing triathlons, a road bike will serve her much better.

If she's that intimidated by clipping in/out, she can practice on a spin bike at the gym, or put her new road bike on your trainer to practice.

Also, she can have her pedals dialed in to be easier to clip out of -- she can change how sensitive the pedal is to her foot.

Finally, if it's that big of a deal, she can learn to ride in stages -- get used to being on a road bike first, in traffic, etc. and then switch to clipless pedals.

I think if she purchased a hybrid she would be upset after her first tri that she bought the wrong bike.

*lurking for answers* I have no bike information but would like to get one in the the future.

Road bike would be my choice. That way, if she really does get into triathlons, it will be a better bike for that.

Ran across your blog. Road bike for sure.

I agree with the others, esp. if she's the competitive type. Otherwise, she'll likely end up buying two bikes within in a short span of time.

PS- it took me about a year to get used to those darn clipless pedals!

Road bike. A hybrid would be too heavy in a triathlon. The tires alone are larger and heavier and produce more rolling friction.
