WAKE UP CALL

Sometimes in life you get a wake up call. That has recently happened to me. I went to the doctor last week. My work-up was abnormal. I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and pre-diabetic syndrome. I felt like my working out 6-7 hours a week would make me healthy. It was a reality check. I am now on a low sodium, low sugar, and low cholesterol diet. Also I cut out the caffeine last week.

I have always told my kids that I I was going to love to 100 just to give them a hard time. I will too. It's just going to take aliitle more work than I had planned. I have the Waterloo Duathlon in Michigan this week-end. I am just goin to take it easy because I am not sure how my diet changes will affect me. I am just glad to go do it and enjoy the day.

Run : 2.0 miles
Waddling to watch the ITU triathlon on TV...............

Luckily all that can be controlled and you can still continue to live a healthy and active lifestyle! I too have to watch my cholesterol- it's an inherited characteristic of my family.
I have had my share of wake-ups and so has my husband. It changes things a little-but temporarily and we forge ahead (he has had hip replacement, rehumatoid arthritis, and I have had Graves' disease and had to have my thyroid radiated....) but we carry on. Things could be worse! MUCH worse! Hang in there...you will get through this and your exercise can only help!

As Fe-Lady says, these are controllable things. So keep running, watch your diet and you will live to be 100 (I tell my daughter the same thing :).

On a good note, you rock. It's true, it's written down. Check out my post:

Sorry about your test results, but a huge "YOU GO, GIRL" for immediately making the changes in your diet that are needed. And you are already active. In the long run, you won't want to give up the exercise, but it might take a few weeks to feel 'nornal' with your new diet.

I'm caffeine free too. It's rough at first, but after a few weeks I bet you feel better than ever!!

Hang in there!

Your diet changes shouldn't have much bearing on your performance, if anything, your performance will most likely improve. I am not diabetic but how I have been eating is relatively the diet nutritionists recommend for diabetics, so I've been told. You're already ahead of things because you work-out and train. I think you're going to surprise yourself!

Yeah, a bit of a shock...yet all controlable and better to know than not know. AND the exercise is always better than not exercising.

Your changes will also help...keep it up.

Hope you have an awesome weekend!! Glad your time with your Dad went well.

Sorry to hear about your dilemma, but I know you will conquer this and keep going. Look at your dad's age. You have more longevity than I do in my family! I am hoping to make it to Waterloo. I am back from vacation but took a nasty stumble when running and now have an ankle that has a baseball attached to it. So, not sure yet. I am hoping another day of icing and ibuprofen get it down so I can at least cheer you guys on at the finish!

I am glad you are making the changes that you need to. Like the others said those things are all controllable and that is good. Have a great week!!

100, huh! Now that's a goal.

Take care of those other things. Sounds like you are on the right track, you know the exercise is good, to keep those conditions in check.

I bet you'll end up feeling better with the diet changes you made. It's hard, but worth it. I've avoided saturated fat for years (I dip my bread in Olive Oil, and use skim milk products) and my cholesterol's gone done as a result. So has my weight. :-)

Here's to living to a healthy old age!

You sound like you are already on the right path. Knowledge is power and now you have the power to make the changes you need to make.
