It's been a good week. Looking back , I changed a few things just as the weather has changed. Sunday was the first outdoor ride on my tri- bike and 40 mile went great. Wednesday was my first mid-week tempo run. Thursday challenged me with the coach trying to get me to bilateral breathe. I also added at lunchtime- a 30 min stength class 2-3 times per week. So it is time to kick it in gear.

Looking at my countdown, I see Galena is only 3 weeks from tomorrow. My first triathlon. OMG! I have never swam in open water before and it looks like my first time will be that day. I have a million thoughts running through my head. Panic about my ability. Can I really do this?? I am 51- so what makes me believe that now I can learn swim and jump in a lake. My emotions run from extremely positive to scared S***less.

Relax! Breathe!
Waddling to calm down.............

Try to get there early so you can warm up in teh water. I found open water swimming to be challenging, but it gets easier with practice!

OK-you do not get to use the age card around me! Also my hubby did his first triathlon at age 58 after learning to ride a bike and swim the previous year. So you will do great!!I echo Lisa's advice. Get there early and get in the water for about 20 min. so your body can acclimate to the water..I didn't do this my first open water tri and swam backstroke almost the whole race..I learned..

You can definitely do it! Go practice a few times in some open water before the event and you will be fine. If during the swim you start to panic, just stop, relax and catch your breath. You will be great!

I did my first triathlon (with an OW swim) without ever practicing in open water, and it was fine. Also, I didn't have a wetsuit.

Some things I found different than swimming in a pool were the crowdedness and bumping around in the beginning, and it was cold.

Good luck!! I hope you enjoy it :)

You will be fine. Warming up beforehand is crucial. Ten minutes works for me. Nice and slow and easy, getting used to the water. Then when it comes to the actually swim, RELAX, find your stroke and rhythm, move forward. Take a breast stroke to sight if you need to until you get used to it. You can also practice sighting in the pool.

Your first tri is going to be so exciting! Take everything in and enjoy. There are all ages, shapes and abilities out there. :-)

Last year Wildflower was my first OW swim and first time in a wetsuit. I discovered that wearing a wetsuit is like wearing a giant waterwing - very comforting.

I third or fourth the notion of getting in the water early and getting used to it. If the water is cold it is a challenge to put your face in and it may make you hyperventilate. That's okay. If you need to just roll on your back until you calm down. And then remember that in fact you DO know how to swim and then start swimming. You'll be fine!
